Deep Dive Feedback

Classroom Observations- Our goal was to gain data on Oracy and English Language Development.

Look for's included:
  • GRR
  • Language objectives
  • engagement
  • and language supports

Our conversation after observing in classrooms resulted in the following:

Classroom Debrief -
  • Common Theme - deliberate use of sentence starters and prompts and students using them.
  • In 3/5 classrooms, there was evidence of Language supports for content, and 4/5 for language
  • In 5/5 classrooms, teacher modeled task
  • language objectives were stronger when teacher modeling was stronger
  • There was evidence of turn and talk in all classrooms
  • Generally, there was an increase in the use of anchor charts - and student using them as reference, compared to previous deep dives.

All in all, Nancy had positive things to say about our school and the progress we've made this year. Thanks everyone!

Updates 4/4/14

I hope Madelyn's visit on Monday helped clarify how Calle de la Lectura, balanced literacy, and GLAD can work together to provide meaningful learning and literacy development for kids.

For the April 7th staff meeting, we will spend some time clarifying our shared understanding of the 4 shifts and the direction for next year. We will also launch the book study for Kathy Esamilla's Biliteracy from the Start. I'm really excited about this opportunity for us to learn and grow as a staff.

I have asked Sue Gorud not to come on that day to address questions around Educator Effectiveness.  I have all of your questions and will begin to address them poco a poco via this blog for the remainder of the school year.  There will also be a significant chunk of time devoted to EE during our August PD days.

Thanks for your effort and dedication, change can be tough.

Josh

Kudos to...

  • Sarah Meier for working diligently to bring struggling readers up to speed!
  • Kristen, Wendy, Vanessa, Luz C., and Courtney for giving up their Saturday mornings to help struggling readers catch up!

Updates

  • Check out our new website!!! Still a few things to update (photos, Frank Allis hold-overs, etc.) but a great new look and easier to navigate.  It will be translated soon.
  • Our computer cart is consistently missing pc's.  Originally, the cart had 30 computers and our REACH teachers struggle to have even 16 working and available for their classes.  Computers need to be in the cart and are not for classroom use unless they are signed out and not during REACH.  If we can't be disciplined about this, the only other recourse is to restrict the use of computers for classroom teachers.
  • I'm looking for teachers who might be interested in helping out with an Outdoor Classroom Grant a group of parents are working on for our school.  The grant requires three teachers to sign on.  Please see me for more information if you are interested.
  • Here is an interesting clip from Univision's Ultima Frontera compliments of Stephanie about Latinos and graduation from high school.

  • 4/7 Staff Meeting 2:05-3:35 in the Art Room
  • 4/8 First Grade Team out all day for Lead Teacher Team work day
  • 4/9 Josh, Emily, Erin out of building (Stephanie is designee)
  • 4/9 Science Night and Book Fair
  • 4/10 Fire Drill 9:05am (REMEMBER TO BE ON YOUR TOES)
  • 4/14-4/21 Spring Break!!!
  • 4/24 State-wide Tornado Drill
